To the polls! Well, some of you...

All those Canadians telling pollsters they don't want an election this fall have a reprieve -- at least temporarily -- thanks to both the Bloc and the NDP.
But in at least three Canadian ridings, voters are headed to the polls no matter what.

Vacancies in the House of Commons aren't allowed to continue indefinitely. The rules require the Prime Minister to call by-elections in at least three, if not four, constituencies this fall, in the event that a general election is not triggered before the end of the year.

At least two of these ridings were winnable for the Conservatives in the past, so there's no obvious reason why the Tories wouldn't be hungry for a chance to pick them up again.

Here are a few more details on the vacancies in play:

New Westminster Coquitlam, BC
Last day for Elections Canada to call by-election: October 13 (for a November 23 vote)
This seat was vacated last spring by NDP MP Dawn Black, who left to run in the B.C. provincial election. Before Black won the seat in 2006, the Tories held it, and they were a reasonably close second in 2008.

Cumberland Colchester Musquodoboit Valley, NS
Last day for Elections Canada to call by-election: October 31 (for a December 9 vote)

This was former Tory, turned Independent MP Bill Casey's seat. He won by a huge margin last time, and his seat is historically kind to the Tories -- Casey's Atlantic Accord dispute notwithstanding.

Montmagny L'Islet Kamouraska Rivire-du-Loup, QC
Last day for Elections Canada to call by-election: November 18 (for a December 29 vote)

Bloc Quebecois MP Paul Crete resigned to run for the Parti Quebecois in a provincial by-election last June. The BQ won this seat by a comfortable margin in 2008, with the Tories second and the Liberals third.

Hochelaga, QC
Last day for Elections Canada to call by-election: March 15, 2010 (for an April 26 vote)
Longtime BQ MP Real Menard's last day in the House of Commons was today. He's running in the municipal elections in Montreal this fall. Historically he's racked up impressive margins of victory in this seat, where the Liberals ran second and the Tories a distant fourth in 2008.

**** UPDATE/CLARIFICATION:
The potential voting dates noted above assume the minimum campaign length of 36 days following the call of the by-election, with voting day falling on a Monday (or first non-stat holiday thereafter.) But the actual by-election date could be later. The exact length of a by-election campaign (whether it is longer than the 36 day minimum) as well as its starting date (whether the the by-election call comes at the deadline, or earlier) are subject to the government/Prime Minister's discretion. You can read more about the rules governing by-elections here.
