Canada Day Cork Boat Craft

By Maureen Macmillan, Twig and Toadstool

Jun 22, 2015

With Canada Day right around the corner, we decided to whip up a cute Canada-inspired craft—little cork boats in our nation's colours of red and white. Kids can build these boats, then set them in water and experiment with floating, buoyancy and speed.

You Will Need:

  • corks
  • twine or embroidery floss
  • white paint
  • paintbrush
  • red paper
  • toothpicks
  • white glue

Red paper, corks, toothpicks, red and white twine, acrylic paint.

How To Make It:

1. Paint your corks white.

2. When the corks are dry, take your embroidery floss or twine and tie it around one of the corks, then knot it tightly.

3. Weave the thread around two corks, over and under in a figure eight pattern. Do this until they are securely fastened together.

They should look like this:

Two white corks tied together with twine.

4. Take your red paper and cut out a maple leaf (if you need a template, do an online search for "maple leaf templates" and you'll find them in all shapes and sizes).

5. Take your toothpick and stick it through your paper leaf.

6. Put a dab of glue on the bottom of your toothpick and stick it in between the two corks.

Now head on out to a lake, river, backyard pool or bathtub and float your Canadian colours downstream!

Happy Canada Day!
