Dinosaur Sensory Soup: Water Play Activity

By Dyan Robson, And Next Comes L

Sensory soups are one of my favourite activities. They're incredibly low prep and I love how versatile they can be. We've done many different variations, but this dinosaur sensory soup was easily one of my kids' favourites. They played with this bin for days! Sometimes they added other toys and materials, but most of the time it was just dinosaurs, water and kitchen supplies.

You Will Need:

  • large plastic bin
  • water
  • miniature dinosaur figures (available at dollar stores and toy stores)
  • liquid watercolors— I combined green and black to make a murky green swamp-like color
  • bowl
  • kitchen utensils: ladle, large spoon, whisk

Fill the large plastic bin with water and add liquid watercolours. Add the dinosaurs, a bowl and kitchen utensils, then set it out for the kids. That's it!

The kitchen utensils are great for working on fine motor skills and exploring volume and measurement. My kids informed me that they're also great for giving dinosaurs showers and baths.

The kids' dinosaur stories were absolutely delightful! My three-year-old was particularly attached to a brontosaurus and created an adorable high-pitched, squeaky voice for it. We heard all about the brontosarus' crazy adventures.

This fun and simple dinosaur sensory soup activity encourages imaginative play and fine motor skills development.
