Canadian defender David Edgar spoiled the party for Manchester United on Monday.

The 19-year-old defender from Kitchener, Ont., scored with 17 minutes left in regulation to help Newcastle United earn a surprising 2-2 draw with Manchester United at home.

Edgar, who was playing only his second game for Newcastle's senior squad, scored on a beautiful curling shot from 30 yards out that just beat Manchester goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar at the far post.

Edgar's goal helped Newcastle solidify its grip on 13th place in the Premiership standings.

The Canadian's goal also denied first-place Manchester from taking a nine-point lead over second-place Chelsea, who plays Tuesday on the road against Aston Villa.

Manchester now leads Chelsea by seven points, but Chelsea has a game in hand.

Edgar made his first team debut for Newcastle against Bolton on Boxing Day.

The left defender is expected to be a key member of the Canadian youth team that will take part in the under-20 World Cup this summer in Canada.

His father, Eddie Edgar, also played soccer. Hewas a goalkeeper for Newcastle United and Hartlepool in England.

On Monday, James Milner gave Newcastle a lead in the 33rd minute with a 25-yard only for Paul Scholes to score twice to give United a 2-1 lead before Edgar salvaged a draw with his goal.
