Not long ago, gays serving in the U.S. military were encouraged to keep their sexuality a secret. Under the policy known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," homosexuals were expected to remain firmly in the closet during their military career.

DADT, as the policy was known, was formally repealed last September, and it appears that the service environment of the U.S. military has already started to change. Far from pretending that sexual identity should be kept secret, soldiers serving at the Bagram U.S. military base in Afghanistan have made an "It Gets Better" video, adding their own contribution to the ongoing project started by U.S. syndicated columnist Dan Savage and his husband Terry Miller to help gay and lesbian youth cope with bullying.

Given that it was less than six months ago that U.S. soldiers weren't even officially allowed to reveal themselves to be homosexual, the video is a testament to the fact that it really can get better for young gays and lesbians who feel themselves harrassed.
