In an attempt to ratchet up the level of fun in orbit, the European Space Agency (ESA) asked young Europeans to come up with a cheerful and inspiring music playlist for astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS).

Youngsters were asked to write down a song selection that they thought would be most suitable for an astronaut on the ISS to listen to. Before deciding, they were asked to imagine themselves in the shoes of the men and women who live on the station, and then put together a playlist.

Of more than 1,000 entries, the winner is 14-year-old Therese Miljeteig from Norway. Her playlist will be downloaded to an MP3 player and shot into space on board ESAs Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) in early 2008. Her winning list:

• Here Comes The Sun - Beatles
• Come Fly With Me - Frank Sinatra
• Rocket Man - Elton John
• Up Where We Belong - Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes
• Imagine - John Lennon
• Flashdance - What A Feeling - Irene Cara
• Walk of Life - Dire Straits
• Fly - Celine Dion
• Rockin' All Over The World - Status Quo
• I Believe I Can Fly - R Kelly

Thus, Celine Dion joins the Canadarm as a Canadian contribution to the ISS and becomes our first official cultural export to the final frontier. Perhaps after hearing that tune for several months, ISS astronauts will truly find out whether, in space, anyone can hear you scream ...
