Candidates for Councillor

Population: 59,870
Voter turnout in 2006 municipal election: 40 per cent

Ward 12 is bounded by Highway 401 in the north, Rogers Road in the south, Jane Street to the west and Caledonia Road to the east.

Forty two per cent of residents list English as their mother tongue. Italian is the mother tongue of another 15 per cent.

The ward also has a large aging population, with those aged 55 and older accounting for about 23 per cent of area residents. Those aged five and under dropped by 20 percent between 2001 and 2006. That group represents only six percent of the population.

Key Issues

Crime: The implementation of an anti-violence strategy in 2009 led to an increase in police presence and community support. The initiative, now completed, helped to reduce crime in the area. Now some candidates have said they believe crime is beginning to rise again. Several candidates are also looking for community intervention with added social programs for youth.

Transit: With 72 per cent of work trips and 69 per cent of non-work trips being made by car, traffic in the ward can be heavy. Under Mayor David Miller's Transit City plan, the ward will have improved transit service following the construction of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, which will break ground next year. After the provincial government withheld $4 billion of funding, the timeline was pushed back and the western portion of the line will now only be completed by 2020.
