Candidates for Councillor

Population: 53,480
Voter turnout in 2006 municipal election: 36 per cent

Located in the southeast corner of the city, Ward 44 is bordered by Sheppard Avenue East in the north, Morningside Avenue in the west, and Lake Ontario in the south. The ward ends on the east at the border with Pickering.

Key Issues

Development: Many residents are concerned with the clearing of undeveloped land for residential development, including land on Island Road, near Rouge Park, which contains over 47 square kilometres of parkland.

Fiscal responsibility: A major theme of the 2010 election for Ward 44 has been fiscal responsibility. Issues include government transparency, lowering property taxes, balanced budgets and debt elimination.

Wind farms: As in some other wards along the waterfront, some ward residents are criticizing a provincial government plan to experiment with offshore wind farms in Lake Ontario.
