Toronto Votes: GTA Regions: Halton Region

Burlington

Elected: Rick Goldring

A waterfront pier on Brant Street stands half-built as construction has been abandoned due to errors in design and safety concerns. The project, which was supposed to be completed by 2008, will likely only be finished in another year or two - a situation that has angered and frustrated residents. Jackson, meanwhile, has said he has managed property tax increases conservatively, and is pledging to find ways to reduce taxes if re-elected. Councillor Rick Goldring, meanwhile, is proposing a freeze on pay and staff for one year. Carol D'Amelio has committed to limiting tax increases to the rate of inflation.

Halton Hills

Halton Hills Candidate

  • Rick Bonette

Incumbent Mayor Rick Bonette is the sole candidate for the town's top job, and has therefore been acclaimed mayor.

Milton

Milton Candidates

Elected: Gord Krantz

Incumbent Gord Krantz is campaigning on his record of keeping Milton's property taxes among the lowest in the GTA. He is also saying he is best equipped to manage the growth of the burgeoning municipality- the town grew by just over 70 per cent between 2001 and 2006. Both Marsh and Volpe ran in the last election, while Qadeer Shah is a newcomer to municipal politics.

Oakville

Oakville Candidates

Elected: Rob Burton

The most high-profile issue in the race was put to bed earlier this month after the Ontario government announced it would not be building a natural gas plant next to a Ford manufacturing plant. But the issue of helping fund the construction of a new hospital has proven to be a thorny one for mayor Rob Burton. Although the province has agreed to take on 90 per cent of the cost, the city must pony up some $200 million for its construction.

Burton has proposed tax increases in order to generate this money, but opponents have criticized this position, calling him fiscally irresponsible. Mulvale, has said Burton's administration did not press the province strongly enough to absorb a larger share of the cost of the hospital. She said she will fight for additional provincial funding in the leadup to the 2011 provincial election. She has also promised to conduct an audit of all expenditures and not raise taxes for a year.
